Best 5 Netflix Films To Procrastinate With Before Finals Start

By Alexandra Brown on April 15, 2015

It’s mid-April, which means the semester is quickly coming to a close. Time has flown by. It doesn’t seem like the school year is almost over, and that summer is right around the corner, but it is.

It will soon be time for summer jobs, vacations and trips with friends, internships, summer classes, and taking a little break from campus before the fall semester starts back up again.

Before we get to embark on all of that, however, we have to successfully finish up our current semester. This means completing group projects and dreaded long-term papers we probably haven’t started yet, but most of all, it means preparing for finals, but of course, procrastinating this preparation as necessary.

Procrastination truly is an art, especially when it comes to finals time. College students will literally do anything and everything they can before actually sitting down with material and studying for a final exam.

This includes cleaning their entire apartment, which hasn’t been done any time prior in the semester, going out, spending time with friends, working out (which also hasn’t been done any time prior in the semester), and most popularly, binge-watching Netflix.

To aid in your finals studying procrastination, here are five films of different genres to binge-watch on Netflix.

1. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

This film, directed by the talented Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Robbie, is an adaptation of a memoir written by Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker in New York City who pleaded guilty to fraud, and other crimes related to stock market manipulation.

DiCaprio’s performance as Belfort is amazing, yet still doesn’t win him that Oscar. Jonah Hill stars as his business partner, who also does a fantastic job in his performance.

The film was nominated for several awards, including five Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writing (adapted screenplay), and Best Actor and Supporting Actor. None were won, however, but the film was a great success and definitely worth watching.

2. Stuck in Love (2012)

If you’re in more of a romantic mood, and don’t feel like watching a romcom you’ve seen a million times, try out this film, which has an original plot, and went surprisingly under the radar.

The plot surrounds two main characters, a brother and sister, both high school and college aged, who are aspiring writers. They grew up journaling, as their father, a well-respected novelist, gave them the choice of working a commercial job, or getting paid to journal.

The film is quite dramatic, with complicated relationships between Lily, the daughter, and her mother, as well as the relationship between Lily’s parents, and Lily’s brother, Rusty, and his new girlfriend.

This film is not your typical romcom, and is filled with good writing and acting.

3. White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)

This artsy, drama/thriller, starring ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager’s” Shailene Woodley, will keep you on the edge of your seat, and you definitely won’t anticipate the turns it takes.

Set in the 1980s, the film follows the main character, Kat Connors, 17, as she deals with her mother’s disappearance. She initially seems fine, and brushes this huge event off and attempts to go on with her life.

Later, however, when pieces begin to fall together, she realizes that it has dramatically affected her life, the relationships she has made with the people around her, and the trust she thought she had for them.

If you’re in the mood for a thriller you’ve never seen before, this film will satisfy your craving, and you will never see the ending coming.

4. Clueless (1995)

If you’ve never seen this movie, you should watch it, and if you’ve seen it a million times, you should still watch it. It’s a ’90s teen classic with hilarious quotes that never gets old.

The plot follows the character of Cher, a shallow, rich, and extremely popular high school student who decides it’s time to do things for others (although ultimately completely self-motivated).

She takes it upon herself to remake a new classmate at her school, giving her a full makeover, and also decides to play matchmaker for this new classmate, as well as two teachers, to distract them from the fact that she’s failing their classes.

It’s a completely ridiculous movie, but definitely worthy of using to procrastinate studying.

5. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

This classic, starring Audrey Hepburn, follows the character of Holly Golightly, who finds herself captivated by an aspiring writer who moves into her building.

If you’re in the mood for a classic, old film, look no further. It’s an American classic, and one worth seeing at least once in your life, regardless of whether you end up liking it. Also, it beats studying for those final exams.
